Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a serious disorder with breathing interruptions during sleep. Understanding OSA's causes and treatments is essential for better sleep and well-being.

OSA

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. These interruptions occur when the muscles in the throat relax excessively, causing a blockage of the airway. As a result, individuals with OSA often experience fragmented sleep, leading to daytime and decreased alertness.

People suffering from OSA may snore, choke, or gasp for air during their sleep. These episodes can occur multiple times an hour, severely impacting the quality of rest. Factors such as obesity, age, and anatomical differences can increase risk of developing this condition.

Diagnosis typically involves a sleep study, where various parameters are monitored to determine severity of OSA. Treatment options range from lifestyle changes, such as weight loss and exercise, to the use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines that keep the airway open during sleep. In some cases, surgical interventions may be considered.
