Obstructive Lung Diseases

Obstructive lung diseases, such as asthma and COPD, are conditions that lead to airflow limitation, making it difficult to breathe. Symptoms often include wheezing, shortness of breath, and a persistent cough. At PCCS, we specialize in treating asthma and COPD, providing solutions to improve lung health and enhance quality of life.

Asthma

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that affects the airways in the lungs, causing them to become inflamed and narrowed. This inflammation can lead to difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing, and tightness in the chest. Asthma symptoms can vary in severity and may be triggered by various factors, including allergens, respiratory infections, cold air, exercise, and environmental pollutants.

Managing asthma typically involves a combination of medications and lifestyle changes. Inhalers containing bronchodilators can provide quick relief during an asthma attack, while long-term control medications, such as maintenance inhalers, help reduce inflammation. It's also essential for individuals with asthma to identify and avoid their specific triggers to minimize the risk of symptoms. Regular check-ups with your PCCS physician can help ensure that asthma is well-managed and that any necessary adjustments to treatment are made.

Complications from uncontrolled asthma can include frequent asthma attacks, decreased lung function, and an increased risk respiratory infections. In severe cases, asthma can lead to life-threatening situations. Therefore, it is crucial for individuals with asthma to follow their treatment plan and communicate openly with their healthcare provider about their symptoms and any changes they experience.  For severe asthma, there are new treatment options such as biologic medications and Bronchial Thermoplasty.  Be sure to check with your PCCS pulmonologist to asses whether you are a candidate.

COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD is characterized by the inability of air to move thought the airways or bronchial tubes.  This is similar to the disease of asthma; however, asthma is usually more reversible.  The limitation in COPD is usually progressive and can be associated with inflammation.

Largely, this disease is caused by cigarette smoking.  Occasionally, genetic conditions (such as alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency) can also contribute to COPD.  Environmental risk factors in addition to tobacco smoke include exposure to heavy exposure to dusts, chemicals and air pollution. The main symptoms are cough, sputum production/bronchitis, shortness of breath, a low oxygen level, and wheezing. The diagnosis of COPD is made using pulmonary function testing to assess for airflow limitation.

The treatment and management of COPD includes reduction of environmental triggers and exposure primarily through smoking cessation as well as pharmacologic and physiologic therapies.  These therapies may be in the form of inhalers, corticosteroids or specialized physical therapy.  Also, if needed, oxygen therapy can be prescribed.
